An Oklahoma police lieutenant and his cousin were found dead in a motel room over the weekend, and two suspects are now in custody, police said.
The bodies of Lt. Trey Pritchard and his cousin, Jeffrey Grafton, both 46, were found on Saturday in a room in Traveler's Inn in Midwest City, Oklahoma. Grafton's son, Jonathan Grafton, 22, and his son's girlfriend, Daphne Mason, 21, are suspected of the murders, Midwest City Chief of Police Brandon Clabes tells PEOPLE.
On Monday morning, Jonathan Grafton and Mason were arrested in Enid, Oklahoma, and are being transported back to Midwest City. Formal charges will be filed in the next two weeks, Clabes says.
"I understand Lt. Pritchard was an excellent officer, well-liked by his peers," Clabes says. "His death is devastating for the community."
Lt. Pritchard and Jeffrey Grafton went to the motel Saturday evening, where Grafton's son and Mason had rented a room. The off-duty police officer and his cousin intended to recover a 2000 Ford pickup truck, which the younger Grafton had allegedly stolen from his father, when both men were shot and Jonathan Grafton and Mason fled the scene in the truck, police said.
The vehicle had a GPS tracker that had initially allowed Lt. Pritchard to locate it. The same GPS helped officers in Enid to locate the suspects Monday, Clabes says.
